Over the past several months I have been reading
The Valley of Vision during my devotional time. I'm moved to tears and greatly humbled by the eloquence with which the writers of those "Puritan Prayers" express themselves. I have been greatly encouraged by reading this, albeit ashamed that my faithfulness in reading it and my Bible has been so poor. I tend to think that if I can't fix whatever problems I'm dealing with myself that no one else can, and I don't like asking for help. I found this line from
TVOV convicting because I too often try to rely on myself rather than God.
Grant that I may distrust myself, to see my all in Thee.

Excellent. I love TVOV. I got a leather copy and read most of them at one point in time. Not only were those Puritans thinkers they were poets too!
One of my favorite lines is,
"My recovery cannot spring from any cause in me, I can destroy but cannot save myself, yet thou hast laid help on the One that is mighty."
One qualm with TVOV, there are no signatures for the prayers! Maybe it's just my flesh but I want to see who wrote these!
Hello, Hannah. I'm a friend of Ryan Thompson's and found your blog on his.
Just thought I'd share that I also began using TVOV as a first-and-last reading for each day, which serves something like a soul alignment for all things between.
By the way, you will have an opportunity to win a free copy of TVOV in an upcoming month of theopenlife.com's Providential Book Give-Away, which would at least make a decent gift.
And finally, your profile describes you as a "Reformed Particular Christian." Is this a misnomer for "Particular Baptist"? I ask because both "reformed" and "particular" imply belief in Sovereign Grace, which makes "Reformed Particular" redundant. The term "particular" is typically applied to Calvinistic Baptists, to distinguish them from Arminian Baptists. In this case, they are Particular because they believe in a definite atonement.
Or can it be that you are a Reformed person who is particularly Christian? No, that can't be it...
Well, I'm off to other things. Thanks for the edifying post.

Ryan-
Thanks for sharing another great quote from TVOV. I, too, am frustrated at not knowing who wrote these prayers. Oh well.
Michael-
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think TVOV has to be about the best devotionals around. My sister gave it to me as a gift this past year and I've really been encouraged by it.
As to the "Reformed Particular Christian" thing, I didn't mean anything by it other than that I am a "Reformed Christian". The way I phrased it was more for my own amusement than anything. I've had to explain myself countless times when I say I'm a Reformed Christian because the natural question in response from people who haven't heard of this is "Reformed from what?" It's no misnomer, nor did I intend it to sound redundant. I really didn't give it that much thought.
Indeed. Enjoy you new blog, Hannah.
